Here is some good information to create, manage, listen to, and share your music collection.

Back up your CD collection

Copy tracks in FLAC format directly from Dolphin

Without having to install any additonal packages, you can very simply copy your CD to files in various formats on a drive in Dolphin.

It is possible to copy files in WAV, but using the FLAC format (Free Lossless Audio Codec) saves disk space while keeping the full quality.

All details are described here.

  • Start Dolphin, you may click on the CD Audio entry to open it

  • Alternatively, to access the CD while customizing the file names, you can use the address abr and type.

For instance:

For an album of tracks from a single artist or group:
audiocd:/?fileNameTemplate=%{trackartist} - %{albumtitle} - %{number} - %{title}

For a compilation of various artists:
audiocd:/?fileNameTemplate=%{albumtitle} - %{number} - %{trackartist} - %{title}

  • Open the FLAC folder and copy the FLAC files

The files will also contain tags for ease of use in collection audio players.

Check and complete the tags

Not all data may be available from the CD itself.
For instance the year maybe missing.
The style of music is almost never available right away.

If you miss some information, use a music database to find it:
discogs.com

Using Armarok, you can use some feature to retrieve the data directly from such a database.

Convert to other formats and quality for mobile devices, keeping the tags

  • Install audiokonverter
  • in Dolphin, right click on a file to be converted or a entire directory to be converted
  • select Actions / convert to / OGG

Soundkonverter 01

  • select destination
  • select quality (10 is the highest, a track will typical use 15 to 20Mb, 0 the lowest using 1 to 3Mb)
  • confirm if you want to keep the stereo

Converting an entire directory will create the same directory with the same breakdown and the same file names (expect the ogg extension of course).
